  Resident Life

Residents Retreat, Mt. Lemmon, AZ

Life is pretty good in Tucson. All residents meet for lunch once weekly in the department to discuss resident issues and socialize. The department and industry representatives frequently sponsor luncheons and dinners, and residents often head out together on an informal basis. Many activities are shared with psychology trainees and faculty and staff of the department. A journal club, organized by residents, reviews and discusses interesting articles. A monthly film club meets at resident’s houses over food and folly to screen mind-tickling films. The Southwest Psychoanalytic Society sponsors a series of educational events and invites trainees to attend for a reduced fee. A group psychotherapy experience is available for residents choose to attend.  Residents in the group regard it as a rewarding, insightful experience. With 22 working days vacation and a psychiatry call schedule averaging four nights a month for interns, three for PGY-IIs, and two for PGY-IIIs, residents have time to read, socialize, enjoy family life, and develop interests outside of psychiatry. Residents culture well-rounded lifestyles and lifelong friendships while getting a great education, which is why residents from our program are in great demand locally and nationally by hospitals and communities seeking psychiatrists and by superior fellowship programs.
