Third-year Clerkship
Third-year medical students rotate for six weeks on psychiatric services. In Tucson, medical students may rotate at University Medical Center, University Physician's Hospital at Kino, Tucson VA Medical Center, and SAMHC. Didactic and clinical instruction is provided by John Racy, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Medical Student Education, psychiatry faculty, and psychiatry residents. Inpatient, outpatient, consultation, and day treatment experiences vary according to the clinical site at which students rotate. A multiple choice shelf examination is required at the end of the rotation.  This rotation is graded as pass or fail.

Each student will also have the opportunity to interview and present a patient in a one-on-one educational experience with an advanced psychiatry resident. The student will receive direct feedback about their clinical and interviewing skills during these sessions which last about an hour. The experience is not counted toward the final grade for the rotation. Both students and residents involved in these teaching sessions have found the experience to be instructive and rewarding.

Fourth-year Rotations
Fourth-year medical students may set up elective rotations in psychiatry focused on a variety of special interests. (See Training Opportunities in the Psychiatry Residency and the Women's Mental Health Program sections of this website for ideas). Students may contact John Racy, M.D., for more information or directly contact faculty members to inquire about electives.
