Description

This year’s event will focus on aggression and violence in children and adolescents. The day long program highlights presentations by a variety of child and adolescent mental health care specialists, including MDs, a PhD, Social Worker and Counselor. Each presentation will include a 10 minute Q & A session.

Target Audience

This symposium is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians (psychiatrists, pediatricians, neurologists, family and general practitioners), nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and school personnel who care for children and adolescents.

Educational Objectives

In the goal to ultimately improve patient care, attendees will be able to:

• Evaluate the neuroscience, taxonomy and psychopharmacology for treating maladaptive aggression
• Discuss diagnostic and treatment considerations, associated with anxiety and depression
• Analyze the impact of bullying and school violence
• Review behaviors, risk factors and possible treatment strategies for young murderers
• Identify effective intervention strategies for various age groups
• Recognize consequences of exposure to violence

Needs Assessment

This year’s topics were chosen in response to recent multiple incidents of school violence, suggestions from past course participants, faculty perception of significant issues in treatments, environmental factors, and review of current trends in literature regarding clinical decision-making and patient care.

Location

Kiewit Auditorium is located on the Arizona Health Sciences Center campus, inside the Arizona Cancer Center, at 1515 N Campbell Ave.

From Speedway and Campbell: Go north on Campbell Ave, turn west into the University Medical Center (UMC) entrance. At the “Visitor Parking Garage,” to the south, free parking is available. From the parking garage, walk north, past the main entrance to the hospital. The Arizona Cancer Center and Kiewit Auditorium are located in a separate building from UMC, on the northeast side of the hospital’s main entrance.

NURSING: This activity, for 7 contact hours, has been approved by the Arizona Nurses’ Association which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

PSYCHOLOGY: This program is co-sponsored by the Arizona Psychological Association (AzPA) and the University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. The Arizona Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education to psychologists. AzPA maintains responsibility for this program. 7 hours of Arizona category 1 credit may be earned.
