  Memory Disorders Clinic

The Memory Disorders Clinic was developed to assess individuals with various types of memory and other cognitive dysfunction. A clinical neuropsychologist evaluates brain function by objectively testing memory and other thinking skills. Individuals are usually referred to the Memory Disorders Clinic when there are complaints of memory or changes in attention, language, visuospatial abilities, reasoning or personality.

The neuropsychologist interviews the patient and someone, such as a family member, who knows the patient well. An extensive battery of paper and pencil tests are administered. Typically, several hours are needed to assess the many cognitive domains. Results of such tests are integrated with history and behavioral impressions to identify weakness in specific areas.

Neuropsychological evaluations provide a wide range of diagnostic information. They can help differentiate among illnesses and describe the course of the illness. Results can serve as a baseline against which to measure future changes. Results may also be used to provide recommendations regarding functional level and treatment plans.

The Memory Disorders Clinic is affiliated with the Behavioral Neuroscience and Alzheimer's Clinic in the Department of Neurology. Individuals may be referred to a behavioral neurologist associated with the clinic when appropriate.
